* Reports of rigging in Afghan polls being scrutinised

LAHORE: President Asif Ali Zardari says it seems as if Al Qaeda chief Osama Bin Ladin isn o longer alive, reported BBC on Wednesday.

Talking to the BBC World Service in Islamabad to mark his first year in office as president, Zardari said democracy was functioning in Pakistan, and the government was fighting militants with determination.

He said the army, the civilian government and democracy could yield better results in the war on terror, and called on the international community to support the Pakistani government.

He said the most important issue facing Pakistan was the lack of resources. He said security forces could expand a military operation against the Taliban if the international community provided support. He said that reports of rigging in the Afghan polls were being scrutinised, but voiced support for presidential hopeful Hamid Karzai. Zardari told BBC there must be an investigation into last week’s NATO airstrikes on two hijacked oil tankers in Afghanistan, which killed 90 people.
